On the way home, I got stuck in traffic as usually happens in Austin at 5pm, and when I glanced down at the dashboard from watching the world go by found that the temperature gauge on the dash was reaching for the hot end of the dial. This was really annoying as I had been battling that same problem a couple of weeks ago and thought that it had been fixed.
So I crank up the heat in the car (never pleasant when it's already 90+ outside) and pray that the temperature drops to a more reasonable level. After ten minutes of sweat while staring at the needle holding just below the H, I decided it in my best interest to pull over and let it cool down.
Once stopped I checked the fan to find it working, so I waited by the side of the road for a while and watched traffic, to let the engine cool down before adding some additional water and anti-freeze.
As I sat in the break-down lane, where no-one should be driving, in rush hour traffic, I was astonished to find people for whom that rule doesn't seem to apply. There was not just one, but two of these scofflaws attempting to use the break-down lane to pass rush hour traffic, I would assume because they were just that important.
The first one got by me before I could get my camera ready, but the second wasn't so lucky. I have nice photographs of an Audi driven by a middle aged man that I have sent to the Austin Police Department along with this story. Both his face and his license plate are clearly visible. I only wonder now if the city will send an officer to ticket him for what I can only assume is "illegal lane usage".
